*Barendra Rebellion or Kaibarta Rebellion - The First Successful Peasant Revolution of India*
The Barendra Rebellion is a revolutionary event in the history of India. It is also known as the Kaibarta Rebellion. This rebellion, which took place at the end of the 11th century, is considered to be the first organized peasant rebellion not only in the history of Bengal but in the social history of India as a whole. This rebellion proved that the so-called lower class fishermen and farmer community could also rule a kingdom.
*What is meant by Barendra*
Barendra is a region of ancient Bengal. It comprised the present-day districts of Malda, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Bogra, Rangpur and Pabna in North Bengal. This region was the centre of the Pala Empire and its land was very fertile. Most of the Kaibarta community lived here. The Kaibartas were divided into two groups - Hele Kaibarta who cultivates and Jele Kaibarta who fishes.
*Background of the rebellion*
The Pala dynasty was founded by Gopala in the 8th century. During the time of Dharmapala and Devapala, the Pala Empire was the most powerful empire in India. But after Devapala, the Pala Empire became weak. When Mahipala II became king in the 11th century, there was rebellion and anarchy all around the empire. Mahipala was an extremely tyrannical and weak ruler.
*Lineage of King Divya Kaibarta*
The lineage of the Kaibartas is very ancient. In Sanskrit, the word Kaibarta means one who depends on water. According to Padma Purana and Brahmavaivarta Purana, a child born from a Kshatriya father and a Vaishya mother is called Kaibarta or Mahishya. According to Bengali historian Sevananda Bharati, the ancient residence of the Mahishya caste was Mahishmati city on the banks of the Narmada River. From that Mahishmati they entered Bengal via Chhotanagpur.
According to some historians, the Kaibartas are of Dravidian origin and they were the builders of the Harappan civilization. According to others, they are connected with the Ganga dynasty. According to N.N. Basu, the first Ganga king Anantavarman was called Rudhi Ganga and the word Rudhi was used for the Kaibartas who lived from the mouth of the Ganga to the Godavari. Therefore Divya Kaibarta was not an ordinary fisherman. He was the heir of an ancient royal dynasty. His lineage had been ruling Barendra as feudal kings for many ages.
*The Three Kings of the Barendra Rebellion*
There were three Kaibarta kings who ruled in the Barendra Rebellion.
The first king Divya Kaibarta. He was the main hero of the rebellion. He was a powerful feudal lord and a skilled warrior. Under his leadership, the Kaibarta farmers and fishermen united. Divya defeated the Pala army and killed Mahipala II and occupied Barendra. He ruled from 1075 to 1080 CE. He brought back peace in Barendra.
The second king Rudraka or Rudok. He was the brother of Divya. After Divya's death he became king. His reign was from 1080 to 1083 CE. He expanded the boundaries of the kingdom and strengthened the administration.
The third and most famous king Bhima. Bhima was the nephew of Divya and son of Rudok. He was the most popular king of the Kaibarta dynasty. In Sandhyakar Nandi's Ramacharitam, Bhima is described as a very mighty and kind king.
*Rule of King Bhima and his works*
Bhima's reign is called the golden age of Barendra. He exempted farmers from taxes. He built many ponds and temples. His capital was at Damara or Dambara. Bhima dug a huge reservoir in his own name called Bhimsagar which is still in Dinajpur, Bangladesh. During his time agriculture and trade flourished in Barendra. Bhima worshipped Goddess Ganga and Goddess Basuli who are the clan goddesses of the Kaibartas.
*The fall of the rebellion*
Pala king Ramapala did not accept this defeat easily. He made a big plan to recapture Barendra. He took the help of fourteen feudal kings including Rastrakuta, Chola, Kalchuri etc. It is said in Ramacharitam that Bhima's maternal uncle Hari betrayed and helped Ramapala. Bhima was captured tactfully. In the battle Bhima was defeated and killed. Around 1084 CE the Kaibarta kingdom fell.
*Importance and legacy of the Barendra Rebellion*
This rebellion is the first successful peasant rebellion in the history of India. It proves that Kaibartas were not just fishermen, they were a warrior and ruling race. As a result of this rebellion, the Pala Empire became weak forever and later paved the way for the rise of the Sena dynasty. It also proves that the Ganga dynasty originated from the Kaibartas like the Western Ganga and Eastern Ganga dynasties. Even today the Kaibarta society of North Bengal, Assam and Odisha worships Divya and Bhima as national heroes. The Kaibartas of Majuli in Assam still remember this glorious history.
