The Status of Kaibartas in the Ahom Kingdom: Their Role and Contribution in the Ahom Battlefield and the Battle of Saraighat:-

The Battle of Saraighat was essentially a naval battle fought on the Brahmaputra River. To win this war, there was a great need for people who knew how to row boats and had knowledge of the river. The Kaibartas were connected to the river from birth. They were fishermen as well as boatmen. That is why the Ahom king gave them importance in the navy.

Most of the naval force under the Paniphukan consisted of Kaibartas. The post of Paniphukan was the highest naval post after the Borphukan. It is mentioned in the Buranjis that the ghat of the Paniphukan was near present-day Pandu in Guwahati. Under him, there were 7000 Naoshal. In Ahom Buranjis they are called Naoshal. Their work was to build boats for war, row boats during the war, and attack Mughal boats.

The Borphukan's big boat, which was called Bachari boat, was 120 hands long and was rowed by 50 men. No one except the Kaibartas could row such a large boat. They knew very well the chars, ghats, currents and winds of the Brahmaputra. With that knowledge, they brought news from the Mughal camp at night and gave it to Lachit Borphukan. This helped a lot in guerrilla warfare. For the embankment that Lachit built at Saraighat, the Kaibartas brought bamboo and wood by boat.

Moreover, as the war became prolonged, food was needed for the army. The Kaibartas supplied the army by catching fish and bringing food by boat.

Although there were Firingi (foreign) boatmen on the Mughal side, they could not understand the current of the Brahmaputra. On the other hand, due to the experience of the Kaibartas, the Ahom army could easily surround the large boats of the Mughals. Historians say that a large part of Lachit Borphukan's navy consisted of Kaibartas, along with Koch, Keot, Kalita, Chutia and other indigenous communities.

Therefore, the victory of Saraighat was not only the personal victory of Lachit Borphukan alone, it was also the victory of the Kaibarta boatmen on the banks of the Brahmaputra.

*Social Status of Kaibartas in the Ahom Kingdom*

In the Ahom kingdom, Kaibartas were not considered to be of the lowest class. The Ahoms gave more importance to work than to caste.

In the Paik system, there were separate khels for the Kaibartas. Such as Hejari Khel, Kathania Khel, Morol Khel. Apart from Kaibartas, Koch and Keot were also in these Morol, Hejari khels. The people of these khels only did boat and fish work. They got land from the royal house.

Although in Hindu society they were kept a little low as Jaliya, but in the eyes of the Ahom king they were the protectors of the kingdom. The Borphukan always respected them. If they showed courage in war, they were also given awards and titles. Later, many Kaibartas also became village headmen.

In short, Kaibartas were not ordinary fishermen or paiks for the Ahom kingdom, they were the backbone of the navy.
